Course Description/Overview
This course builds on students' basic background and knowledge of treating patients with cancer from previous coursework. Students will gain more expertise and knowledge in the clinical management of oncology patients. This class will focus on the most common cancers in the general population (prostate and breast) and what physical therapy interventions might be indicated based on common side effects. We will review primary treatment modalities for these cancers and their potential side effects on patients in more detail. At the conclusion of the course, students will have the ability to screen, evaluate, and provide treatment interventions to cancer patients across a variety of settings. Class will include lecture with several case presentations, group discussion on case-based problems, review of evidence-based treatment methods and conclude with clinical experience at a comprehensive cancer center.
