Dear Loggers,
I write today with the sad news that Marta Cady, former Associate Dean of Students, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, June 3, 2022. Marta was a beloved member of our campus, and had a deep and lasting impact on all those that knew her.
Marta started at Puget Sound in August of 1993 and stayed with us until her retirement in January of this year. When she first started, she was thrown into Orientation and immediately fell in love with the work. Amazingly, Puget Sound offered Marta all the necessary positions to keep her career on the upward trajectory. She had a wonderful journey as a Program Coordinator, an Assistant Director, an Associate Director, a Director, an Assistant Dean and finally as an Associate Dean of Students for Student Support. Her most important work though was supporting students who lived through the experience of sexual assault/sexual harassment. From her role as advocate, Marta developed Peer Allies, the peer to peer support group for students who have experienced sexual assault and harassment. Marta considered her work with this group one of her greatest accomplishments. Marta felt humbled by her experience to work with many of these students and to support them no matter where they were in their journey.
Marta’s length of service and the energy she poured into everything she did will leave an indelible mark on the Puget Sound community at large. There are few of us that weren’t shaped by her student-first mantra and willingness to go the extra mile to support our students. Those of us that were lucky enough to have been hired and mentored by Marta had the extra privilege of learning from a dedicated professional who always took extra care to impart wisdom that she’d learned through her years of service at Puget Sound.
Many of us have been personally impacted by Marta’s life, and many of us may be struggling in the wake of her death. Please take care of yourself, and one another, and remember that resources like CHWS (for students), the Employee Assistance Program (for staff/faculty), and the University Chaplain are available if you would like to connect with someone as we go through this liminal time together.
If you would like to send a note or card to Marta’s family, please feel free to put it in intercampus mail to the Dean of Students Office, CMB 1069, and I’ll make sure that it is delivered to her family.
Take care,
Dave
