A 'Groundbreaking' Night at the Museum

Honoring the burrowers, tunnelers, and earth-movers among us! 

You may see them as pests, but the moles, worms, and gophers in our yards are doing a lot more than just pushing dirt around. Burrowers help to aerate soil and loosen sediment, often improving conditions for plants and other animals. Help us celebrate the earth-moving animals in the Slater Collections! 

Children's craft activity - Personalize a terracotta pot and plant the seeds to start your very own Tacoma garden!

Specimen preparation - As always, our Collections Manager will be turning dead animals into museum specimens. You can ask questions and get hands-on with his dissections and preparations.  

Live animal guests - For this event we will have a diversity of digging, burrowing, and earth-moving live animal guests! You can expect a mammal, a reptile, and some arthropods. 

This is a free, family-friendly, drop-in event!
