Note: Chism and Clapp charges cannot be charged to p-cards, but departments are strongly encouraged to charge honoraria and any other internal charges (e.g., campus catering, Bookstore, Silver Cloud lodging) directly to the Chism or Clapp grant.
Deadlines
The pool of applications will be reviewed three times per academic year: The first is April 1 for the next academic year, then September 15, then January 15 of the same year, subject to remaining funds. Please apply well in advance if you are planning large-scale projects. Applications for funds to support a scholar or artist in residence for a semester or more must be submitted by January 15 of the previous academic year. Applications must be submitted prior to the event for which funding is requested.
The Chism Fund will support visiting artists or scholars in the arts and humanities at the University of Puget Sound for a period ranging from a few days to several months, though normally not to exceed a semester. The visiting artist or scholar will enrich the intellectual life of the Puget Sound community by delivering one or more public lectures (depending on length of stay), contributing formally or informally to courses related to his or her expertise, and participating in other curricular or co-curricular activities as appropriate. If the artist or scholar is here for a semester, they will also teach at least one course in an appropriate department or program. Performing artists or groups invited as Chism visitors must include among their campus activities a substantial critical or reflective presentation as well as performance.
Although Chism funds may be used to support artists or scholars within any field of the arts or humanities, proposals to bring to campus (1) specialists in a topic before 1900 or (2) artists or scholars adding racial or ethnic diversity to campus programs will be given preference. Proposals that contain an interdisciplinary component are especially encouraged.
In applying, (1) briefly describe the field of the visiting scholar(s) or artist(s) and list potential candidates; (2) discuss how the visiting artist(s) or scholar(s) will contribute to and enrich the intellectual life of the university; (3) provide a detailed estimated budget.

Available funds will be dependent on endowment income, but it is reasonable to anticipate an annual pool of as much as $35,000 per year. Honoraria will typically be funded for no more than $2,000 per two-three day visit, or $5,000 per week.
Individual faculty members, teams of faculty from a single department or program, or groups of faculty from multiple departments or programs are encouraged to submit proposals for use of Chism funds, and priority will be given to collaborative proposals. Departments may also submit more than one proposal, although when possible and appropriate, funds will be distributed among proposals from different disciplines or departments. When a department receives major funding from the Chism Fund (such as for a semester visitor), it should not anticipate Chism support for other larger proposals for a time.
