Kristen Murphy

Director of Community Music

Flute Instructor

Kristen Murphy began her work at the University of Puget Sound Community Music Department as a flute instructor in 1987. Three years later, she accepted the position of program director. In addition to her administrative position, she continues to teach private flute lessons through the department and performs flute music periodically. She holds an AA from Cottey College and a BA from Puget Sound.

"My position in the Community Music Department combines my passions for music, education, and community service. Providing music instruction to campus members and to a diverse constituency of people from our region is rewarding work indeed."

At the University of Puget Sound, Kristen Murphy has served in elected roles and appointments which include positions on the Staff Senate and the Budget Task Force. She also has served on numerous committees, such as the staff recognition committee. 

Additionally, Ms. Murphy stays active as a volunteer beyond the university. She completed two terms as a member of the Culture & Heritage Advisory Council at MetroParks Tacoma and served as its chairman. She also served two consecutive three year terms as chairman for the Northwest Chapter of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. Her work for the National Guild includes service a trustee, serving on the Council of School Directors, participating in the Mentoring and Partnership Program, working on a national conference planning committee, and serving as a site visitor for the organization. She was recently involved as a member of the collegiate divisional steering committee for the National Guild and played a supporting role in the Guild’s Ambassador Network program.
