Katie Hart, Class of 2018, was an International Political Economy major from Corvallis, Oregon, with minors in Business and Spanish. Katie was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and was captain of the Puget Sound Women's Lacrosse team. In addition to serving as a Civic Engagement Coordinator at the Center for Intercultural and Civic Engagement, and an Education Coordinator for the Peer Allies Program, Katie volunteered with Communities in Schools and the Peace Community Center. In the summer of 2016, Katie traveled to Madrid, Spain as part of the Madrid Summers internship program. In Madrid, Katie worked in the Red Cross center, leading academic and value-based activities with children aged three to 12 from various race and class backgrounds in Spanish. The following summer, Katie interned with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, where she provided free legal support and council to individuals being detained at the Northwest Detention Center. Katie's GDS senior thesis project was titled Maximizing the Benefits of International Voluntary Service: Relational Dimensions, Institutional Indicators, and Constructed Narratives. Katie's thesis examines international voluntary service in Latin America, with the goal of determining ways to maximize benefits and minimize harms to host communities.
