Dear Members of the Campus Community,
As a campus community and as a country, we continue to grieve the loss of life of Black men and women at the hands of those sworn to serve and protect us all; to advocate for justice, and to hold accountable the systems and the individuals that perpetuate violence and cause such deep and lasting harm.
On March 3, 2020, Mr. Manuel Ellis was killed in Tacoma while being taken into police custody. Today the Washington Attorney General filed felony charges in Pierce County Superior Court against three police officers; two have been charged with second-degree murder, and one with the first-degree manslaughter.
While nothing can restore Mr. Ellis’s life or erase the pain of all who knew and loved him, justice is being pursued. And while that is proceeding, we relive the trauma of what has happened. Please know that you do not need to process this alone. We are a community, and we are here for one another.
