Dear Members of the Campus Community,

As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, we recognize that all members of our community are affected differently by the impact of the violence that occurred at the World Trade Center, in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon—and its aftermath. Some of us remember the events unfolding on our television screens. Some of us lost loved ones. Some of us weren’t yet born. And some of us were there.

The university is commemorating this somber anniversary and offering programming and support in several ways.

  • 9/11 and National Defense: 20 Years Before, 20 Years After, 20 Years Ahead
A lecture by Dr. Harry S. Laver, Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Thursday, Sept. 9, 5 – 6 p.m., in the Tahoma Room in Thomas Hall.
  • Commemoration and Reflection
Chaplain Dave Wright ’96 is hosting a time for us to be in community with one another to honor those whose lives were lost and their loved ones, Friday, Sept. 10, noon – 1 p.m. in the Tahoma Room, with a community reflection beginning at 12:20 p.m. Please come by as your schedule allows.
  • The Towers’ Long Shadow
David Kelly ’80 reflects on his experience at the Twin Towers in this piece shared on Monday in The Hatchet.

I would ask us to remember, too, that this may be a difficult day for members of our Muslim community and others who are affected by the Islamophobia rooted in reactions to 9/11. This is part of the painful legacy of that day.

However you experience this anniversary or recall the events of Sept. 11, 2001, I hope that you know the Logger community is here to support you.

Sincerely,

Isiaah
