Dear Campus Community:

We are writing regarding the news on Thursday from the federal administration announcing a new Executive Order to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education and instructing the Secretary of Education to take “all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the states.”

This uncertainty can be stressful and confusing, especially as it relates to federal student aid programs, civil rights enforcement, and accreditation oversight in higher education. It's not clear when or how this order will be implemented. We are continuing to follow the information coming from the federal administration about their next steps, including the announcement today that functions like the management of student loans could be shifted to the Small Business Administration, among other changes. This is an evolving situation and we will be monitoring it closely. It is important to remember that Congress must approve the closing of any executive agency, including the Department of Education. We have not seen strong support for that action demonstrated across the parties as doing so would also require changes to federal laws applicable to accreditation, civil rights, and student aid.

We expect there may be challenges to this Executive Order in the coming days and weeks, as the administration continues to announce changes in process or oversight. We are hopeful that any changes will prioritize removing barriers and reducing administrative burdens so that universities can continue to serve our students and communities effectively and efficiently. We will continue to monitor the issue closely, including tracking court actions and analyzing news from the federal government and guidance from our professional organizations.

In the interim, it is possible that the order could cause disruptions and delays in the federal financial aid program, which includes student loans and Pell Grants. We are working to identify what supports our students may need should disruptions occur. In the meantime, students should contact Student Financial Services with any specific questions.

I want to affirm our commitment to providing an environment where all members of the campus community are supported and successful. We will stay focused on continuing our important work of preparing the next generation of leaders who will leave Puget Sound ready to be engaged citizens, problem solvers, creators, and entrepreneurs. Together, we will navigate these uncertainties guided by our core values.

We will provide future updates to the campus community with any further developments that affect the university.

Sincerely,

Isiaah Crawford, Ph.D. | President
