Summer Herout is an IPE major from Portland, Oregon. Summer participated in several outdoor and athletic activities at Puget Sound, including rugby, the Garden Club, the Climbing club, and intramural volleyball. Summer was selected for a faculty-led study abroad trip to Thailand, where students participated in homestays, studied Thai, and conducted research with local university students on various aspects of tourism.  Using Martha Nussbaum’s Central Capabilities as her central framework, Summer’s thesis, Human Dignity and the Refugee Crisis: How Children are Forced to Grow Up, explores how NGOs provide aid to refugee children in camps and whether this aid allows children to promote their capabilities.
