Who is the course for?

The course is designed for outdoor enthusiasts and new leaders adventuring in areas an hour or more from definitive medical care. The content and the training are recommended for outdoor enthusiasts and new leaders on short day and short overnight trips.

Course Syllabus

Course Dates & Times

  • Course beings at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2024 and will conclude at 6:00 pm on May 21, 2024.

  • The daily schedule will run from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  There will be a 45- 60 minute lunch break each day.

Registration and Payment

  2. Submit your payment (your spot in the course is not reserved until we receive your payment)
    1. Card payments can be made at the Expeditionary (1408 N Alder) or over the phone (253-879-3403) during open hours
      1. Monday - Friday 3:00 - 7:00pm

  3. Once your payment is received, we will finalize your registration and you will receive further instructions via e-mail.

Course Materials

WMTC researches, writes, edits and publishes their own field guides and teaching materials. The following are provided with your registration.

  • Full color water-proof field handbooks; for everything you can't remember....
  • Weatherproof patient SOAP notes.

Necessary Personal Equipment

ALL the listed clothing IS REQUIRED for effective practice during simulations and labs. Clothing can usually be purchased at lower costs through Goodwill, Salvation Army, local thrift stores, churches, yard sales or secondhand stores. You may have fake blood, mud, dirt, sand, etc. ground into any of the clothes you wear. Clothes may be cut up during simulations to access “wounds.”

In order to protect your personal space during simulations, wear shorts/swimsuits/sports bras/etc. under simulation clothes. They will not be cut.

Below is a general list for courses. Closer to the course, the instructor may provide a slightly more detailed list that fits the current season.

    • Weather appropriate attire for being outside

    • Clean change of shoes for indoor sessions and comfort between scenarios

  • Personal Protective Equipment
    • N95, NF95, or KN95 Masks
  • Optional
    • Colored pencils or markers can be helpful for note taking during anatomy lessons
    • Personal hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, etc.

Food and Meals

Meals are not included in the course fee.

Lunch will generally be 30 - 60 minutes.  You will have time to eat on campus or bring your own lunch.  There is generally not enough time to go off campus for lunch.

Lodging

Students living in campus housing 
Lodging on campus is available if you are living on campus for the spring semester of 2022.  If you live on campus, we will request a late move out for you. Please let the Expeditionary staff know you will need a late move out.

Students living off campus/Members of the Public
You will be responsible for your own housing.

There is camping in the area at Dash Point State Park, and there are hotel, Air BnB and B&B and options in Tacoma.

Parking overnight on campus is available for RV's with full self-contained sanitary systems.
 

Course Location

The course takes place on the Puget Sound campus with scenarios on campus and in local parks.
