The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is your best source for information about all VA educational benefits programs. You can contact the VA directly at 1.888.GIBILL.1 (1.888.442.4551).

Puget Sound is unable to determine which VA benefit program is most appropriate for you. Please contact the VA for help in identifying the benefits for which you qualify.

Education Benefits for Veterans

The tuition and fees payment is made directly to the school on behalf of the student once the school’s enrollment certification is processed.

The maximum tuition and fee reimbursement is capped at the national maximum rate and changes each academic year (August 1 to July 31). Based on the veteran's length of service, a student may be eligible for a percentage of this rate. The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will reflect the student's eligibility percentage. Please check the VA rate tables to determine payment rates.

The academic year for VA benefits is from August 1 to July 31. If you use your full capped benefits during the fall and spring semesters, you will not be eligible to receive Ch. 33 benefits during the summer term.

The Yellow Ribbon Program allows institutions of higher learning to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution. Puget Sound has agreed to contribute the maximum percentage rate of 50% to eligible students, making a private university education very affordable.

Eligibility requirements

Undergraduate Students

To be considered for Yellow Ribbon benefits, you must be an undergraduate student eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefit (Chapter 33) at the maximum benefit rate of 100%.

Graduate Students

The School of Physical Therapy supports two incoming Doctor of Physical Therapy candidates through Yellow Ribbon per year. Candidates must be eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefit (Chapter 33) at the maximum benefit rate of 100%. Offers of the two seats will be made on a first-come, first-served basis based on the academic year in which the student is admitted to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Currently, no other University of Puget Sound graduate programs are participating in Yellow Ribbon. If you are interested in another graduate program, please contact Student Financial Services to inquire about utilizing Ch. 33 benefits.
