Faculty Research

Ken Clark is currently mapping a thick section of basaltic lavas and sedimentary interbeds in the southern Olympic Peninsula called "the Crescent formation". He maps rock exposures along logging roads, ridge crests, and valley floors to unravel the structural history of the Crescent formation. He is also trying to understand how the formation was formed by studying its petrology, stratigraphy, petrography, and geochemistry.

Ken's current publications include:

Polenz, M., Miller, B.A., Davies, N., Perry, B., Clark, K.P., Walsh T.J., Carson, R.J., Hughes, J.F., and Blakely, R.J., 2011, Geologic Map of the Hoodsport 7.5-minute Quadrangle, Mason County, Washington: Washington State DNR DGER Open File Report 2011-XX (in press).

His list of student theses advised, papers/posters presented by his students over the past few years:

  • 2003: Heather Easterly

Thesis: A stratigraphic, petrographic, and geochemical study of a series of lavas, dikes, sills, and sedimentary rocks in the Crescent formation.

  • 2002: Elizabeth Beaulieu

Thesis: A Turbidite series in the Crescent formation, Olympic Peninsula, WA

  • 2001: James Gaynor

Thesis: A Stratigraphic section of a submarine fan interbedded in the Crescent formation, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

  • 2000: Laurie Gorton

Thesis: The Stratigraphy, Petrography and Geochemistry of the Mount Tebo Area, Southern Olympic Mountains, Washington

Barry Goldstein is a Quaternary/glacial geologist and geomorphologist. His research includes examining the physical and biological records of environmental and climatic change in alpine settings (Colorado Rockies, western Washington state), arid regions (northern New Mexico, the lower Galilee in Israel), as well as much older evidence for landscape change (Triassic rocks in the Four Corners area). He also has long-standing interests in evolution, geoarchaeology , and water resources. He was instrumental in starting the Environmental Studies Program at Puget Sound, served as it's first Director, and he continues to be deeply involved in planning and teaching within the program.
