What is the process for requesting a disability housing accommodation?

Residential Life offers a variety of living environments that accommodate many different lifestyle needs. Within this assortment of provisions, there are a limited number of single rooms available for students with severe medical, psychological, psychiatric, mobility or visual or hearing impairment related conditions, whereby the symptoms of such conditions prohibit the student from living with a roommate.

Students who feel that they may have such conditions that may require a single room accommodation, accessible room, or other types of housing adjustments will need to complete the Request Disability Accommodations form.
 

Policy for Single Room and Priority Housing Selection Disability Accommodation

SAA is the designated office on campus that reviews documentation and student requests for disability accommodations.

SAA considers a single room accommodation if a student has a disability with symptoms that prevent them from accessing their education and community life unless they have a single room. Your treating professional must be able to write that it is absolutely necessary for you to have a single room because of specific symptoms to stay at Puget Sound.

A housing disability accommodation is only given when:

  • A student has a severe disability-related housing need (severe medical, psychological, psychiatric, mobility, visual, or hearing impairment related conditions, whereby the symptoms of such conditions prohibit the student from living with a roommate). Documentation from the treating health professional will be requested and assessed.

And…

  • Does not have the option to choose a single room. For example, an incoming freshman or transfer student.

If a student is approved for a housing accommodation:

  • Residence Life will contact the student to determine availability on campus.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to respond to Residence Life outreach emails.
  • A single room disability accommodation is intended for a qualified first-year student. Beyond the first year, Priority Housing Selection is given for future terms to allow the student to choose a single room in campus housing. Students will work with Residence Life to choose a single room or another type of housing among the various housing options.

Disability housing accommodations are intended to support students who have a documented need.

Disability housing accommodations are not intended to resolve roommate issues. Residence Life works with a student to address roommate and residential issues.

Disability housing accommodations are not intended to provide a quiet place to study and do homework. It is the student’s responsibility to find such places in the library and other areas on campus.
