The Professional Arts Training Program at Seattle Repertory Theatre offers internships in Company Management, Development, Education, Marketing, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Properties Design, Scenic Painting, Stage Management, Production Management, and Technical Direction. Interns undertake responsibilities as members of the staff, contribute ideas, participate in department and staff meetings, and complete projects under the guidance of their supervisors. Staff members guide the work of each intern to help prepare them for a career in professional theatre.

Applicants should regard the Professional Arts Training Program as a full-time commitment of at least 40 hours per week throughout our full season (September through May). The apprenticeship is an intensive nine-month (August to April) total immersion into the world of a major American regional theatre. It offers a unique combination of performance, training, observation and networking. The program is designed to serve as a bridge between undergraduate study and a professional career. The Acting Apprentice program specializes in providing the kind of practical training and real-world experience that give our apprentices a competitive advantage in a crowded marketplace.

Professional Intern Program

The Actors Theatre Intern Company is a group of emerging professionals entrusted with key positions of responsibility in the theatre. Over the course of their intensive season-long residencies (August through April), they are involved in both short and long-term projects for their respective departments, the Brown-Forman Series, and the Humana Festival of New American Plays. They hone their skills through direct collaboration with department managers and staff and are the creative and administrative force behind Apprentice/Intern Company projects. A grant of $5000 is awarded to each full-season intern to help defray the cost of living.

Interns work closely with the staff and the visiting artists to execute the full range of summer activities, including mounting and running of the shows, assisting with rehearsal residencies where new work is being created, hosting the visiting artists and workshop students, and the creation of visual displays about the work. Experience, particularly in the technical and front-of-house aspects of production, is welcome but all interns will receive additional training for their work, which will be in a multiplicity of production areas. Interns do not specialize. Interns are full members of the artistic community at the festival, and as such are encouraged to participate in the discussions that follow all the performances at the festival.

All activities will be held on the Amherst College campus in Amherst, MA between for the month June 30 and the beginning of August 10. Internship dates may be somewhat flexible. The internships are unpaid, but cost of living is low and housing is provided. McCarter internships are post graduate, full time, season long positions. These internships are for individuals who desire a challenging practical experience in the real world, and for those who are willing to devote their full energies to the internship. Since hours and duties vary with different departmental assignments, taking on additional work outside of the internship may be difficult, and will be permitted only in cases of need. McCarter interns gain significant real world experience by assisting full time staff, participating in theater wide events and projects, and becoming core members of the McCarter Community. In addition to considerable responsibilities within their designated department, all interns can expect to perform interdepartmental tasks for the benefit of the theater, such as assisting with student matinees, fundraising events, poster runs, etc. Interns are given the opportunity to learn how each department contributes to the whole of McCarter through seminars with high-level staff, and are also invited to attend selected staff, board and committee meetings to increase their understanding of how a large regional theater operates. Internships typically run from late August through mid-June. All interns receive a weekly stipend of $75.

PlayPenn accepts six individuals who have an interest in playwriting/dramaturgy/directing/production to take part in their July conference. This is a wonderful opportunity for motivated young writers, performers and technicians to work alongside experienced professionals in a concentrated and fulfilling environment. Each intern will assist, on a daily basis, a collaborative team in the development of one of six plays invited to the Conference chosen in a national search. Interns will also assist, as needed, in the administrative, front of house, technical, and public relations responsibilities of the conference. Interns will be given the opportunity, and will be expected, to participate in a playwright’s workshop led by a professional playwright, culminating in the public presentation of their work performed by conference artists.

Each intern will receive a stipend of $300 for their contribution to the work at hand. Unfortunately, PlayPenn cannot provide housing, though they are willing to assist in connecting out of town candidates with local interns to help with accommodations.

Portland Playhouse provides emerging artists with professional experience and training. By providing a vital and supportive atmosphere in which to learn from the many challenges of the professional theatre industry, WTF offers students educational opportunities seldom available elsewhere. WTF offers programs for young actors and directors, as well as opportunities for designers, technicians and administrators.

ACTING APPRENTICESHIP
When selected to the program, apprentices have the opportunity to audition for Festival productions and participate in numerous projects, productions, and special events sponsored by the Festival and directed by the Festival Directing Corps. An apprentice’s theatrical experience is not built on performance opportunities alone. Apprentices work in a number of capacities throughout the summer that make the season possible, including building sets, hanging lights, assisting the marketing department, greeting audiences, and providing vital support to the many and varied needs of the Festival on a daily basis.

Apprentices also take part in a unique hybrid curriculum that brings together training and practical application in the interest of launching careers. Resident artists teach a wide variety of classes across many disciplines, and master classes with world-renowned visiting artists are scheduled throughout the summer. Apprentices will interact with, observe, and ultimately learn from many of the established artists who visit the Festival each season.

DIRECTING INTERNSHIP
The Directing Internship is the unique, entry-level training program for young directors at WTF. Each Directing Intern assists a renowned professional director on one of the Festival’s productions. Each Directing Intern also direct members of the Apprentice Company in projects presented at the Festival; these projects focus primarily on the process of working with actors as opposed to the full production process itself. Directing Interns are generally recent graduates from undergraduate theater programs and have solid experience both directing their peers and assisting seasoned professionals. Directing Interns are responsible for their own daily living expenses and pay a fee for housing on the Williams College campus.
