The Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society was founded at Ohio State University in 1915. We are a national organization devoted to the promotion of research and academic excellence in the biological sciences. The Puget Sound chapter, Alpha Phi, was chartered in 1948 by noted Puget Sound biologists including James R. Slater and Gordon D. Alcorn. Phi Sigma members participate in activities such as volunteering, social events, tutoring, and an annual research symposium.

Ben Smith: President

Hi everyone! My name is Ben and I am a senior and a Molecular and Cellular Biology major from Mountain View, CA looking to become a nurse after college. I’m looking to become a nurse within oncology (cancer) and love learning more and more about new cancer treatments and approaches. I also love genetics and anything to do with RNA or DNA! I am currently an organic chemistry CA and have been an IA for biology for over a year. Outside of school I volunteer at the Tacoma Neighborhood Clinic as clinical support and help physicians treat underinsured and insured patients. I also volunteer at Allenmore and Tacoma General Hospital to help nurses care for patients with menial tasks such as bathing and feeding patients. I look forward to being the president this year and hope we can reach out to the rest of campus way more than we have in the past! Alongside my amazing exec, I also look forward to running research events, high school demonstrations, and much much more for the better of the community! I hope as president to be able to help not only the students at UPS but also be able to have a better outreach to the rest of Tacoma!

Myah Stauffer Vice President of Phi Sigma
Myah Stauffer: Vice President

Hi friends!!!!! My name is Myah, I am a senior and a biochemistry major. I’m from Mill Creek/ Bothell Washington. I love churros, crocs, and spending time outdoors. I am a huge fan of anything water related, swimming, jet skiing, kayaking, ect. I spent last summer on campus doing biochem research that focused on bacterial cell walls and enzymes. And spent this summer doing research with Dan Burgard in the chemistry department (feel free to ask me about it if you are interested). I enjoyed doing research the past few summers so much that I am hoping that I can find a job in research in the future. I worked as a lab CA for organic chemistry last semester, and am going to be a CA once again this semester, so if you see me feel free to say hi! I am really excited to get to know all of you over the course of this year. And I am looking forward to working with all of you as your vice president. I hope that we can build a strong welcoming community together!!

This summer, I spent almost the entire time working with kids at a Summer fun program. The remaining free time was spent keeping in shape with my old club softball team. My goal after college is to attend dental school then further my career in pediatric dentistry. I look forward to working with all of you!!

Preston Armstrong Phi Sigma Co-Symposium Chair
Preston Armstrong: Co-Symposium Chair

Hello everyone! I am Preston. I will be majoring in Cellular Biology, (maybe chem), and minoring in business. I am one of the Co-Symposium Chairs with Ishaan. I'm excited to work with everyone here! I love to be active, whether that is going on hikes, swimming, cliff jumping, or simply walking. I love to get out and going. But I also love my time inside doing absolutely nothing. One thing I also love to do is whenever I am not focused on my other commitments is going to concerts! The photo I chose was from Elton John’s Farewell tour which was a 10/10! My goal after college is to attend dental school and then further specialize to become an orthodontist. I am excited to work with Ishaan to plan an amazing symposium and other events! This summer I spent my time shadowing some amazing doctors and I’ve learned a lot about the world of dentistry from them!
