What are Google Workspace Marketplace Add-Ons?

Google allows third-party developers to provide add-ons in the Google Workspace Marketplace that extend the capabilities and functionality of Google Workspace applications such as Google Docs. These add-ons are not subject to the same agreement that the university has in place with Google for core services within Google Workspace. Since the agreement contains important statements regarding privacy, security, and support, the installation and use of add-ons must be separately evaluated.

Third-party add-ons may display advertisements, require agreeing to additional terms of service, have a separate privacy policy, or retain your information. Anyone using add-ons should carefully consider their data protection responsibilities.

Due to privacy and security concerns, Technology Services will only allow selected third-party add-ons to be available for installation in the Google Workspace Marketplace.

What add-ons are on the allowlist?

For a list of add-ons available for installation, please reference this document (login required).

How can I request that an add-on be added to the allowlist?

If you are aware of a Google Workspace add-on you would like to have available for use, please contact the Service Desk at servicedesk@pugetsound.edu with the following information:

  • The name of the add-on you would like to have enabled
  • The URL of the add-on you would like to have enabled
  • A general description of why you would like to make use of the app/add-on

NOTE: Technology Services does not provide support for third-party add-ons other than to review the add-on and determine if it should be allowed for installation.

How does Technology Services decide if an add-on can be added to the allowlist?

Many factors go into the decision for enabling a new add-on. Here are some of the considerations:

  • Reputation of developer
  • Terms of service
  • Privacy policy
  • Scope of permissions granted to add-on
  • Continued maintenance of add-on
  • Business need for added functionality described
  • Existence of similar functionality in core services or other supported technology systems
  • Location of data storage
  • Data protections for confidential information
  • Cost of add-on
  • Staffing resources to administer add-on
